Tom "Wally" Inouye is a name that resonates deeply within the skateboarding community. Born on January 22, 1959, in Los Angeles, California, Tom's journey into the world of skateboarding began in the late 1960s. His story is one of innovation, passion, and a relentless drive to push the boundaries of what was possible on a skateboard.

Tom's first encounter with skateboarding was serendipitous. Around 1967, he stumbled upon his sister's discarded metal-wheel roller skates. With the help of a friend's father, these skates were transformed into makeshift skateboards. This humble beginning ignited a lifelong passion. By 1970, Tom had acquired his first proper skateboard, a Black Knight, and soon after, he began crafting his own boards.

The nickname "Wally" became synonymous with Tom's identity in the skateboarding world. In 1973, he pioneered the wall ride, a trick that would forever change the sport. This innovation earned him the moniker "Wally," a name that stuck and became a testament to his creativity and skill.

Tom's versatility as a skateboarder was unparalleled. He excelled in freestyle, slalom, downhill, and pool skating, showcasing his ability to adapt to various terrains. His talent did not go unnoticed, and he quickly gained sponsorships from notable brands. His early sponsors included Stinger, Bennett, and Tunnel. In 1976, he turned professional and signed with Sims, followed by Tracker, Brad Strandlund Bearings, and Robinak. Later in his career, he was associated with Caster, Gullwing, and Gyro.

One of Tom's most iconic moments came in October 1977 when he graced the cover of Skateboarder magazine, performing a radical jump out of Upland's full pipe. This feat was a precursor to the Ollie, a trick that would later become a cornerstone of skateboarding. His influence extended beyond tricks; he was a pioneer in pool skating, even founding "Inouye's Pool Service" to gain access to backyard pools for practice.

Tom's contributions to skateboarding were recognized when he was inducted into the Skateboarding Hall of Fame in 2019. Beyond skateboarding, he is a man of many talents. He enjoys snowboarding, surfing, and creating art. He also runs "Wally's Pepper Sauce," a line of hot sauces, and works as a food and beverage manager at Timberline Ski Area in Oregon.

Today, Tom resides in Hood River, Oregon, with his wife, Kathryn, and their daughters, Aspen and Autumn. His legacy continues to inspire generations of skateboarders, reminding us all of the power of innovation and passion.
