Ty Page was born on May 30, 1958, and raised in the “Endless Summer” surf lifestyle of Redondo Beach, California. His family’s love for surfing and outdoor activities shaped his athletic abilities from an early age. Ty’s sister, Kim, fondly recalls their “endless summer” life, where their dad would sometimes skip school to take them surfing.
Ty began surfing at the tender age of 3 and even won the national surf title in 1972, and he was just 15 when he secured second place at the U.S. Surfing Championships in Huntington Beach. Also, alongside fellow Makaha skateboarder Rusty Henderson, Ty was part of the Wave Trek Surf Team during the early '70s.
Ty’s transition from surfing to skateboarding started when he received a skateboard at the age of 4. Initially, he skated in a basic surf style, inventing freestyle maneuvers with Bruce Logan. Then, in 1972, with the introduction of urethane wheels, Ty’s gained interest in skateboarding as a career.
In 1973, Ty nervously entered his first skateboarding competition at the Del Mar Nationals, and by 1975, he was a contest veteran, securing second place in the junior men’s freestyle division.
Ty’s unique skate tricks included the Ty Hop (now known as the pop-shove it), Ty Slide, and 360-headstands.
The Z-Boys, famous from “Lords of Dogtown,” were influenced by Ty’s surf style, and contrary to the movie’s portrayal, Ty and Bruce Logan had been skating surf style since 1964.
Ty’s impact on skateboarding extended beyond tricks—he emphasized safety and responsible riding.
