Alva Skates is a name synonymous with skateboarding history, and has left an indelible mark on the sport.

Founded by the legendary skateboarder Tony Alva in 1977, the 70s skateboard brand emerged during a pivotal era when skateboarding was transitioning from a fringe hobby to a cultural phenomenon.

Tony Alva’s vision was revolutionary: create a skateboard company owned and operated by skateboarders themselves. At a time when few "skate" brands were dedicated exclusively to skateboarding, Alva Skates filled a void. The first deck, released in 1977, featured Alva’s iconic logo die-cut into glittering grip tape, and set against a gradient of yellow and orange paint. This skate deck, known as the “Alva Flame”, became quintessential to the 70s skateboarding scene, and a symbol of rebellion and authenticity, which is what Alva Skates was all about!

Team riders for Alva reads like a Who’s Who of Skateboarding Legends. Alva Skates sponsored) a roster of influential riders who shaped skateboarding culture:

Tony Alva: The founder himself, Tony Alva, epitomized the Alva Skates ethos. His aggressive style and innovative tricks set the standard for generations of skaters to come.
Stacy Peralta: A Dogtown Z-Boy and co-founder of the legendary Powell Peralta Skateboards, Stacy’s connection with Alva further solidified the brand’s influence.
Eddie Reategui (El Gato): Venice Beach local, known for his aerial prowess, El Gato’s affiliation with Alva helped elevate the brand’s status.
Dave Duncan: A vert skateboarding pioneer, Duncan’s technical skills showcased Alva’s commitment to progression and pushing boundaries.
Chris Cook: A freestyle magician, Cook’s fluid freestyle skateboarding moves resonated with Alva’s vibe.

As well as skateboard decks, Alva Skates have also produced tons of rad and historic skate product over the years, such as:

Alva Conical Wheels: Introduced in the 70s and recently reissued, these wheels come in vibrant colors and feature slight inset bearings. The Conical 88A and Conical 101A variants cater to different skateboarding styles.

Alva’s clothing line includes hoodies, T-shirts, and beanies adorned with the iconic Alva logos. The OG Flame Logo Hoodie and Scratch Logo T-Shirts celebrate the brand’s legacy.

Alva’s Influence: The brand’s aesthetic—bold, rebellious, and artistic—seeped into popular culture beyond skateboarding. It influenced music, fashion, and street style culture across the globe.

Alva Skates Legacy: As one of the very first skater-owned companies, Alva Skates paved the way for future skateboarders to enter the skateboard industry.
Collaborations: Alva’s 45th-anniversary collaborations with Vans, Independent Trucks, and Road Rider Wheels celebrate its enduring impact.
