About Salman Agah - Pro Skateboarder Profile, Biography and History

Salman Agah: The Skateboarding Pioneer Who Redefined the Sport

Born on July 10, 1972, in Washington, D.C., Salman Agah is a name synonymous with innovation and influence in the world of skateboarding. With Persian and Azeri roots, Agah's journey began at the tender age of five when he first stepped onto a skateboard. His early years were spent in Iran and Europe before his family settled in San Jose, California—a city that would become the backdrop for his rise in the skateboarding scene.

Agah's talent was undeniable from a young age. At 16, he caught the attention of skateboarding legend Stacy Peralta, who brought him on board as a sponsored amateur for Powell Peralta. This marked the beginning of a stellar career that saw Agah skate alongside icons like Tony Hawk, Steve Caballero, and Tommy Guerrero. By 1989, he had turned professional, joining the ranks of Real Skateboards and later The Firm Skateboards.

One of Agah's most significant contributions to skateboarding was his mastery of the "switch stance"—a technique akin to ambidexterity in the sport. This innovation not only set him apart but also earned him the title of Thrasher Magazine's Skater of the Year in 1993. His influence extended beyond the board; he was named Transworld Skateboarding's Most Influential Skater of the Decade in the 1990s and Big Brother Magazine's Most Beautiful Skater.

Throughout his career, Agah was sponsored by some of the biggest names in skateboarding, including Powell Peralta, Vans, Black Label Skateboards, and Independent Trucks. His partnership with Vans was particularly noteworthy, as it led to the creation of the Salman Agah Signature Shoe, which was produced from 1993 to 2001.

Agah's impact wasn't confined to skateboarding alone. He co-founded The Academy of Skateboarding, a venture focused on staff development, training, and team building within the industry. He also launched The Skaterade Beverage Co., a drink specifically formulated for skateboarders, and collaborated with artist Shepard Fairey on its packaging. Always ahead of his time, Agah developed Icelounge.com, one of the first action sports-driven social networks, and Skatecoverage.com, a media monitoring service for skateboarding.

In addition to his entrepreneurial ventures, Agah participated in the Vans Warped Tour, competed in the X Games, and served as a World Cup of Skateboarding judge. His travels took him across the globe, from Asia to South America, spreading the culture and spirit of skateboarding.
